What Do…

...Dan O’Brien, Tiger Woods, Lori West, Joe Montana, Evander Holyfield, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ivan Lendl, Martina Navratilova, John Smoltz, the US Women’s Soccer team, and almost every other professional athlete have in common?

They all visit a doctor of chiropractic to improve their performance.

 CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR ATHLETES

Chiropractors focus on the spine in relationship to the nervous system, which consists of your brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves.  If there is a compromise within the joints or structure of the spine, it will compromise the communication line between your brain and the rest of the body.  Chiropractors remove the interference to allow the spine to function properly, in turn, this allows the nervous system to work properly.

Listen to what they have to say. “I have to have my adjustment before I go into the ring,” Evander Holyfield, Heavyweight Champion.

“I feel I compete eight to ten percent better from regular chiropractic use,” Dan O'Brien, Decathlon Gold Medalist.

“We are a perfect team—the world of fitness, body building and chiropractors,” Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The New Golf Swing and Chiropractic

Let’s face it, golf is a sport of skill with the contact of the golf club to the ball, and the motion of your body to transform that energy.  Our body uses energy for the perfect full swing, and eventually a balance in the body. A balance that is a necessity when you have a momentum,  when you rotate on a fixed axis.  The axis is the spine, where the arms swing around, following through with the rotation of the club.   This rotation creates stress to the athlete’s body, not only to a golfer, but also athletes of baseball, football, tennis as well as hockey players.

The next time you try to perfect your golf swing,  keep the following in mind:

  • Have your spine checked by a chiropractor to increase peak performance and prevent injury.

  • Warm up your body before you play golf.  Like any other sport, your body needs the blood in the muscles, and a quick way is with warm up stretches or exercises prior to the game.

  • Repeated one side rotation can increase muscle tone on one side and weaken the other.  Exercise both sides of your back evenly to avoid low back injuries.

  • Keep your shoulders and low back strong with strengthening exercises.  Right handed golfers place more stress on the right shoulder from the rotation of the golf swing, so keep it strong to prevent injury and increase strength. Who knew?

  • Wear proper footwear.  As a right handed golfer, your left foot remains in the same place.  The wrong footwear can place further stress on the foot, ankle, knee and hip

  • Strengthen your leg muscles, hamstrings and quadriceps, to protect your knees from injuries.

  • Strengthen your leg muscles, hamstrings and quadriceps, to protect your knees from injuries.

  • Strengthen your neck and back.  Your neck and back are stressed when you     swing your club repeatedly.  Again, strengthening not only increases the strength of the muscle, but may help in avoiding injury to the region.

The biomechanics of your body during a stressful motion, in this case golf, will have an effect from your head to your toes. Certainly something to think about the next time you enjoy the next round on the golf course.
